6 of the Best Worship Books on Logos.com

We’ve written a few times about Worship Matters, Bob Kauflin’s seminal work on worship ministry, but it’s just one of several exceptional worship books available on Logos.com. As the Logos edition of this powerful resource nears completion, we thought it would be a good time to highlight some of its peers.

Whatever Happened to Worship?

Though he only wrote 15 books in his lifetime, A. W. Tozer wrote thousands of articles and essays—many of which have been posthumously compiled into books, bringing his lifeworks collection up to a commanding 56 volumes. This book, compiled from his writings, serves as a call to worship. Tozer identifies and confronts a trend for Christians to substitute service for worship. It’s a powerful little book that if anything has become more relevant as time has gone by.

Worship in the Early Church

As with most ecclesiastical questions, some hold up the early church as the gold standard, and the only enduring model. This book details the worship and liturgical practices of the first churches, explaining how their worship reflected their heritage. This is an interesting study for any believer, but especially applicable for those who lead a body of believers in worship.

Art for Faith’s Sake (8 vols.)

The emotions associated with faith are complex and often difficult to express. Liturgical art gives voice to them, often with more precision and honesty than any other medium. This eight-volume collection contains both instruction about the art of worship and examples of it in practice. Get these books, and you’ll be inspired to express your faith in more creative ways.

Rhythms of Grace: How the Church’s Worship Tells the Story of the Gospel

Mike Cosper, a successful church planter, sought-after speaker, and Gospel Coalition writer, approaches the penultimate question: “What is worship?” His search leads him down a trail of discovery about the gospel, and how the regular patterns of the church reveal the good news on which it has been founded. Though it will be most familiar to those from a Southern Baptist tradition, its principles are universal.

The Complete Library of Christian Worship (7 vols.)

This is the big one. If you’re looking for comprehensive coverage of worship-arts traditions from all the major denominations, this is the collection you’ve been looking for. It contains works from more than 600 different scholars on the subject of worship. Get it today to let myriad perspectives inform your own.

The Church at Worship Series (3 vols.)

Each of these three books contains a case study of worship practices and church life in exotic places. Modern church leaders will benefit equally from reading how God worked in a fourth-century Jewish congregation, a sixth-century Byzantine church, and an African American congregation in 1895 Mississippi. Practices and traditions from these three diverse congregations will inspire you toward more meaningful worship today.

Born in WV, Ray escaped to North Carolina at a young age. He came to Logos after an 8 year stint at a faith-based nonprofit in New York. When he is not assembling sequences of words, he’s probably running, surfing or shooting skeet, but you should probably go look for him. He has a terrible sense of direction and is probably lost.
